For more than 100 years, Jiaotong University has created many fruits with knowledge and wisdom, and wrote many 'firsts' in modern history. This is the wisdom of talent training, the wisdom of scientific research, the wisdom of serving the society, and the wisdom of winning glory for the country. News.com specially launched the 'Wisdom of Jiaotong University' column, focusing on the light of wisdom of Jiaotong University people and showing the major contributions made by Jiaotong University people to national development and social progress.

Recently, the team of Professor Dong Jie of the National Engineering Research Center for Light Alloy Precision Forming, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and the team of Professor Dierk Raabe of the Max Planck Institute of Steel in Germany have made important progress in the research on the mesoscopic model of the plastic deformation of magnesium alloys. The crystal plasticity model was used to describe the deformation mechanism of dislocation slip during the deformation process of magnesium alloys, and the phase field model was used to describe the behavior of twinning nucleation, expansion and growth. Coupled crystal plasticity-phase-field full-field model with twinning mechanism. The model provides an effective means to study the plastic deformation mechanism of magnesium alloys under complex boundary conditions.

The research paper 'An integrated crystal plasticity-phase field model for spatially resolved twin nucleation, propagation, and growth in hexagonal materials' (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijplas.2018.03.009) was published in the top international plasticity journal International Journal of Plasticity, Ph.D. student Liu Chuan is the first author, Professor Dong Jie and Dr. Martin Diehl of the Max Planck Institute of Iron and Steel are co-corresponding authors. Professor Dong Jie's team and Professor Dierk Raabe's team will continue to work together to improve the model, and use this model to deeply study the room temperature and high temperature plastic deformation behaviors, crack propagation and material failure mechanisms of magnesium alloys.

In recent years, with the strong support of Academician Ding Wenjiang, Professor Dong Jie's team has achieved a series of research results on the plastic deformation mechanism of magnesium alloys, and has published 3 papers in the International Journal of Plasticity. The other two are, Associate Professor Jin Li published the paper 'In-situ investigation on the microstructure evolution and plasticity of two magnesium alloys during three-point bending. Jin Li, Jie Dong *, Jie Sun, Alan A Luo*. International Journal of Plasticity72 (2015) 218-232” (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijplas.2015.05.010); Dr. Shuai Dong published cyclic deformation of magnesium alloys Paper on Mechanism and Fatigue Damage 'Characteristic cyclic plastic deformation in ZK60 magnesium alloy. Shuai Dong, Qin Yu, Yanyao Jiang*, Jie Dong*, Li Jin, Fenghua Wang, Wenjiang Ding. International Journal of Plasticity 91 (2017) 25- 47” (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijplas.2017.01.005).
